Funduscopy

Funduscopy is a test that allows to see inside the fundus of the eye for diagnosis or evolution. The pupil is dilated pharmacologically with drops for examination and using an ophthalmoscope. This examination of the eye is used to diagnose the disease and its evolution.

Preparation

The fundus eye examination, just takes a few minutes. However, dilatation of the pupil can take up to an hour, patient must wait in the waiting room of the clinic, an effective pupil dilatation.

The fundus eye examination is performed as an outpatient in our consultation.

 Do I need to be accompanied?  It is recommended.

After the test, the pupil will stay dilated a few hours, where the view will be altered. It is not advisable to drive. In case to attend alone, you should arrange for someone to drive you home or take public transport.

Medication: There are not any previous specific medication in this type of study. However it is mandatory notify the doctor if you are using some eye drops.

 About food: it is not necessary to be fasting.

Dilated pupils are sensitive to the sunlightit is recommended to to wear sunglasses

To have an angle closure glaucoma is a relative contraindication, because when the pupil is dilated the disease can worsen quickly.  Must take special care when patient has cataracts because the lens may be thickened. The ophthalmologist will know how to perform correctly about, without undue risk.

There are no risks or contraindications during pregnancy or lactation in this type of study.

Funduscopy procedure

For fundus examination, once in the clinic, some drops are put in the eyes to dilate the pupils by little. These drops may sting a little.This process can take several minutes to one hour. It will be checked, how the pupil dilates until it is in the ideal state to perform the test.Then in consultation with the Doctor and sitting on the chair, lights will be turned off to facilitate the inside vision of the eye. You will rest chin and forhead on a metal structure in order to fix the look and use the magnifying glasses and lights that allow the ocular examination.

When fundus examination is complete, you can relax your eyes and carry out a normal life. Pupils dilatation may take a few hours, so sunlight or possible disturbance is normal. The most frecuence thing is that you can not read up close, so it is recommended to pospone activities that require it.

 

 

Risk and contraindications

The severe complications in the fundus examination are infrequent. Some that may occur are:

• Conjunctival irritation or itching eyes when instill eye drops to dilate the pupil.
• Allergic to the medication to dilate the pupil
• Acute glaucoma attack, because when the pupil is dilated the channel on which the liquid drains inside the eye, it closes and can greatly increase intraocular pressure.
