OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY (OCT)
Nowadays is a essential image test in ophthalmology due to the information it provides. With this test many diseases are diagnosed in the retina (especially in the macula), as well as follow its evolution and the response to treatment.
This test performs a virtual picture of the different retinal layers, providing very useful information in cases where it is suffering or suspected problems such as the macular degeneration, macular holes, retinal problems in people with myopia, epiretinal membranes and central serous chorioretinopathy (disorder that is most frequently related with the stress).
In addition to its use in retinal problems, also analyzes and studies the fibers of the optic nerve in glaucoma and can see its evolution through time and the response to medication used for treatment. this field, complete additional information to the visual field, which is the usual follow-up test for these patients.
This test, as well as providing data about retina and glaucoma, provides the image of the anterior segment of the eye, thus being able see and measure how are related the cornea with the iris and crystalline as well as distance of each of them for lenses that we implant inside with our surgeries.
Is a non-invasive test, fast and without side effects, which has brought a revolution since the last years, and has decreased the realization of invasive procedures such the classical AFG for studying the eye by intravenous contrast injection.
In macular degeneration related to age, it allows us to diagnose what type and stage patient presents, and see if it is better or worse since the last visit and / or treatment.
