Amblyopia commonly known as lazy eye, is a condition that may go unnoticed in childhood, and is very important for early detection can be solved.

Pediatric ophthalmologists emphasize a complete eye examination for all children at 4 years of age.

This is because most children do not complain about seeing worse with one eye. In the ophthalmology we find surprises and with less vision in one eye despite prescribe the correct graduation.

Lazy eye is an eye fails to develop considered normal visual acuity, due to multiple causes such as obvious strabismus or microstrabismus (forias with abnormal retinal correspondence), difference of ocular graduation between both eyes (anisometropias), congenital cataract or other causes of opacity, and even a bilateral high ametropia or what is the same, a very high graduation in both eyes from the earliest childhood.

It is very important to detect this problem, since from four years to seven or eight, it is possible to occlude the normal eye, and thus the weak one begins to work and collaborate with the brain. This can be achieved only during the years in which children have great cerebral plasticity. Once the age of eight is over, it is not possible to recover visual acuity. Therefore the image that reaches the brain of the objects that are perceived, is the one that reaches a single eye, since, the brain to avoid distractions and double visions or diplopia, annuls the amblyopic eye. All this involves no development of binocular vision and loss of spatial depth, so important for some professionals.

As adults there are professions in which the development of a correct binocular vision is essential, for example those in which it is necessary to look through a microscope. And some others, such as fireman, sailors or plane pilots, in which the visual acuity reduction is not allowed below a limit in one of the two eyes.

Lazy eye is treated with occlusions in the good eye from hours to days, depending on the depth of amblyopia, a correct follow-up plan with an ophthalmologist is necessary, because depending on the results and the patient’s improvement, the hours of occlusion are reduced, watching that the amblyopia is not reversed and the healthy eye has not been penalized too much.

Many adults with stereoscopic or three-dimensional vision and good visual acuity were children with amblyopia. They received early treatment, so it is important to be aware of this problem and its early detection.
