The Spanish Glaucoma Society has recently published a magnificent book in which it is tried to assess the positive or negative influence in glaucomatous disease by different activities of our daily life. These conclusions are based on scientific studies and the results can be summarized in the following points:
.-Acupuncture is not preventive or therapeutic in patients with Glaucoma.
.-Nowadays, there is not enough evidence to know whether or not to recommend Chinese medicine in the treatment of this disease.
.- If you have Glaucoma or predisposition to have it, it is recommended not to consume caffeine or to do it in a moderate way.
.- There is no evidence for or against about the consume of tea or chocolate.
.-To live above 3,000 meters, does not seem to predispose to the development of this disease.
.-You can travel by plane because the cabins are pressurized.
.-Patients with Raynaud’s syndrome have greater predisposition to glaucoma.
.-When there is an intense ambient heat, a state body dehydration can cause a decrease in eye pressure which is beneficial for glaucoma.
.- Aerobic exercise causes a temporary reduction in intraocular pressure, and practice it regularly causes a chronic improvement in levels thereof, and a slower progression of the disease and lower percentage of eye surgery.
.-Pigmentary glaucoma, is a type of glaucoma, in which the exact opposite can happen after practice exercise, which increases the ocular pressure. Hence the importance in diagnosing it to recommend this practice as usual or not.
.-Regarding swimming, it has been proven that small glasses cause an increase in ocular pressure, being recommended using mask-type glasses with bone support.
.-Some YOGA postures upside with head raise eye pressure temporarily, and although there is not enough scientific evidence to prohibit their activity in a healthy patient, it is recommended to control its performance in patients with poorly controlled glaucoma despite being properly medicated.
.-Isometric exercises descend ocular pressure, although with less effect than aerobics. Special care should be taken with the lifting of weights or certain activities that increase or produce Valsalva maneuver, and avoid them in glaucomatous.
