Eye infections have usually been treated with antibiotic eye drops, and good standards of effectiveness have been obtained in fighting germs. And in this way we have treated acute conjunctivitis, chronic blepharitis, infectious keratitis, styes (obstruction and inflammation of the periocular fat glands), etc.
In the last months the pharmaceutical industry has been developing other powerful ocular antiseptics, not belonging to the group of antibiotics.
That is why today we have three new eyedrops with very different characteristics and highly effective against pathogens.
1.-Iodim, Angelini laboratories.
It is iodate Povidone diluted 0.6% with sodium hyaluronate and medium chain triglycerides. In Ophthalmology, Povidone Iodate diluted to 5% is used after surgical procedures, it is the protocol in cataract surgeries and in intravitreal injections. In fact, there is scientific evidence that it reduces the risk of intraocular infection (endophthalmitis), and that is why its widespread use. However, there was no Povidone Iodate marketed for use in eye drops so far. With Iodim, the problem is solved.
Due to its composition, it stabilizes the tear film in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction and the effective result is when recurrent eye infections are observed.
2.-Ozonest, Esteve laboratories.
It is a new concept and is available in eye drops and eye wipes.
It is composed of sterile ozonated oil. Ozone binds to vegetable fatty acids, and in contact with infectious cells, it releases oxidative compounds, which accelerate the destruction of bacteria, viruses and fungi, thus having a complete anti-infective action. It is recommended in pathologies such as: blepharitis, conjunctivitis, infectious keratitis and conditions such as styes, also in people who habitually wear contact lenses and have eye irritation, in ocular trauma and for patients undergoing eye surgeries. Its dosage is between two to six drops per day depending on the severity of the process to be treated.
3.-Ocudox, Brill Pharma laboratories. This Hypochlorous Acid is to reduce the concentration of bacteria and fungi on the ocular surface. It is almost 100% effective after fifteen minutes and, after thirty minutes, effective against viruses. It also prevents meibomian gland dysfunction by attacking bacterial lipases. Durante la pandemia por COVID-19, los oftalmólogos lo hemos usado como desinfectante de nuestros ojos y mascarillas, ya que es perfectamente tolerado al nebulizar sobre mucosas, incluidas también la nasal y la oral. The dosage is: unlike the previous drugs, it is an application in the form of a spray on a cotton ball twice a day, rubbing on the root of the eyelashes, that area has a large amount of ocular germs. The use in medicine of these products means that the usual antibiotics are used less, thus avoiding resistance to them, with what this entails, having today new and powerful therapeutic discoveries to use.
