Electronic screens, whether tablets, cell phones etc, play an important role in our way of life today. This has made us change our lifestyle habits, and even the way children play.
These screens are not completely harmless, and cause a large number of alterations in our health, and specifically in our eye health. Below I will discuss some of the undesirable effects that technology causes on the human body.
1.-Mental tiredness.
After a while using these screens, the ability to concentrate falls. There are studies that relate attention deficit disorder so fashionable now, with overexcitement and the rapid visualization of images to which it is subjected with this technology. This hinders the ability to concentrate, which is not exactly fostered, rather the opposite.
2.- Refractive defects.
The use of this devices long in time, causes a greater effort of vision in children with uncorrected visual graduation defect, they also have to adapt their eyes to look closely at a point of light. This encourages the appearance of defects of graduation over time, especially myopia. In fact, in recent years, myopia has increased dramatically in the world, In fact, in recent years, myopia has increased significantly in the Western world and, it seems that it may be related to what we are talking about.
It is very important that today’s children play outdoors as children did in the past. This causes them to have to focus at a greater distance, and sunlight induces an increase in dopamine, which, in turn, prevents myopia.
3.- Decompensations for latent strabismus.
Keeping your eyes close to a screen can cause the decompensation of a latent phoria and lead to a manifest strabismus to be treated. In addition to restricting the use of screens, the first ophthalmological examination should be done at 3-4 years to all children, to avoid this problem.
4.- Eyestrain by high brightness.
Due to the high intensity light of this technology, visual exhaustion occurs, when the pupil dilates, the visual quality is worse. A soft or medium light is recommended to reduce visual fatigue.
5.- Positional anomalies.
It must be said, that many of the children who use these devices lying on the floor, have cervical hyperextensions and contractions in dorsal muscles, which also causes fatigue and muscle and cervical contractions.
6.- Dry eye.
When we are staring at the screen, we forget to blink and that causes the dryness of the eye, there is greater evaporation of the tear, dryness on the ocular surface, and a grit or itch sensation.
To avoid this inconvenience, it is important to remember that you have to blink, and lubricate the eye from time to time with some artificial tears without preservatives with the presence of hyaluronic acid.
In addition to all these side effects, there are others below:
- Delay in acquisition of vocabulary, reduction of it and difficulty reading.
- This sedentary lifestyle in children, is at risk of becoming overweight, and also risk of cardiovascular disease.
- This encourages social isolation, greatly limits social skills among children and adolescents, in full formative stage.
For all these reasons, the rational use of telecommunications and new technologies must be more rational for the sake of our health.
